Ben & Jerry's Rebranding

Ben & Jerry’s Rebranding

For my project, I wanted to experiment with textures found in nature and within environmental disciplines in order to push further on Ben and Jerry’s climate justice campaign. I believe I am approaching this project with a sturdy environmental foundation, as I have been studying the discipline for the last three years. Something I know I wanted to avoid in this project was greenwashing. Greenwashing is the use of natural colors and designs to communicate a more environmentally friendly appearance, even though the product itself has a rather large carbon footprint. My goal in this project is to create an ice cream label reflects both the climate crisis we find ourselves in as well as Ben & Jerry’s position within this discussion.

Included below is a pattern that includes both the color schemes rendered from the typology of Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors and elements of topography (or elevation mapping) inspired from the geological discipline. This pattern was included in my three deliverables also pictured below: an ice cream cup, ideally made from ethically sourced paper or engraved onto metal tins (making them reusable within Ben & Jerry's stores); a reusable tote; and a Ben & Jerry's menu poster.
Typology: This grid is a simplified color palette of 15 different Ben & Jerry's flavors. I included a color key on the West, South, and East edges of the frame.
This pattern was created and inspired by traditional topography, or elevation maps. I chose this pattern to connect the color schemes of various Ben & Jerry's ice creams with the environmental mission they so proudly claim to stand behind. I also think this choice of wavy pattering is in keeping with Ben & Jerry's youthful graphics that are typically found on their ice cream containers, posters, etc.
This label is a simple alteration of the traditional Ben & Jerry's sign. instead of reading "Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream," I changed the wording to be clear with an environmental mission.
Completed design for ice cream cup label.
Deliverable 1: Mockup of ice cream cup.
The design above is an image created for a tote bag, wherein the land mass of the rendered globe is covered by the Ben & Jerry's pattern above.
Deliverable 2: Tote bags and multi-use items are undoubtedly better for the environment than single-use plastic bags. Buy some tubs and take your ice cream to go in this environmentally-focused bag!
Deliverable 3: This is a standard menu found at any Ben & Jerry's, altered to include patterns and items above.
